Maines Design is committed to creating thoughtful, comfortable, environmentally responsible shelter. We are determined to reduce the impacts of climate change by designing new homes and renovations that will be resilient while providing comfort and joy in an uncertain future. We work closely with our clients to discover their inspirations and goals, and we collaborate with builders and other professionals, guiding the team through the process of designing a high-performance, low-impact new home or renovation. While the majority of our projects are in Portland and its surrounding towns and the Midcoast region, we have designed homes and renovations in other parts of Maine and in other states.
Inspired by traditional New England farmhouses and barns, the clean lines of modern Scandinavian architecture, and the honest use of materials, our Principal, Michael Maines, brings years of experience in residential design and construction to every project, along with a wealth of technical expertise, to create beautiful, functional, healthy and environmentally friendly spaces. With a BS in engineering from Tufts University and decades of work in residential design and building, Michael Maines shares building science knowledge with the public as co-author of the book, Pretty Good House Book, co-host of the BS*+Beer Show (*building science), frequent contributions to Fine Homebuilding magazine and as an editorial advisor at Green Building Advisor and at speaking engagements across the US.
