After 17 years of supporting hundreds of environmental organizations and nonprofits, we at Green & Healthy Maine are over the moon to have joined 1% for the Planet in January 2023!

In 2002, Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Matthews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, created 1% for the Planet with the mission of “bringing dollars and doers to accelerate smart environmental giving.”

Following the premise that we can do far more together than we can alone, 1% for the Planet directs one percent of the gross sales of participating businesses—whether or not they have been profitable—toward environmental nonprofits of their choice. Members can have one or multiple nonprofit partners, and they can change their partners as often as they choose. Up to half of the contributions can also come from volunteer time, in-kind donations and other shared-value collaborations.

As of 2023, 1% for the Planet has a network of more than 3,400 businesses and an expanding community of individual members, in over 64 countries, coming together to protect the future of our planet. 33 of these businesses—including Green & Healthy Maine’s publisher, The SunriseGuide, LLC—call Maine home, and that number is sure to grow!

Some of the nonprofits supported by 1% in Maine include Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association, Maine Huts & Trails, Penobscot River Restoration Trust, Appalachian Mountain Club, Friends of Katahdin Woods & Waters, Northeast Sustainable Energy Association, Maine Audubon, Wolfe’s Neck Center, Maine Coast Heritage Trust, Maine Foodscapes and WindowDressers.

The intent of 1% for the Planet is to help fund these diverse environmental organizations so that collectively they can be a more powerful source in solving the world’s problems.
