Home + Energy Chat: Creative Ways to Reinvest in Your Property with an ADU

Wednesday, June 4 at noon ET
Register via Zoom

Looking to add value to your property while creating new, flexible-use living space? You might be interested in an accessory dwelling unit (ADU): a small home separate from your main house that can be used for aging in place, housing family members, generating rental income…you name it! But it isn’t as simple as just dropping an ADU into your backyard. You’ll want to consider zoning, your site, financing and more. Join us for this episode of Home + Energy Chats with experts from Backyard ADUs, Knickerbocker Group Prefab Pods, and BrightBuilt Home as we explore ADU infrastructure, construction techniques, zoning, and creative ways to approach financing. We’ll demystify the ADU process, and you’ll walk away ready to get started reinvesting in your property!

IAQ Club: Who Holds the Keys to a Healthier Home? • Maine Indoor Air Quality Council

This session will cover the key elements to best IAQ practices and a healthier home. Who holds the keys, is it the designer, builder, sub-contractors, HVAC contractors, Rater/Advisors, Code officials, product manufacturers, and/or the occupants. No surprise here, it’s a combination. Let’s pick the locks and discuss the various roles each key holder has in creating common failures (unhealthy conditions) and current successes that open the doors to a healthier home.

If a healthier home is as simple as turning a key, why are so few occupants asking for their home to be healthier? Maybe semantics with comfort or … we’ll discuss consumer indifferences. Why are so few doors, opportunities, open and others require special keys to enter.
The door is open, join us.

BuildingEnergy Boston 2025 • NESEA

BuildingEnergy Boston 2025 • NESEA

  • Google Calendar ICS

BuildingEnergy Boston is a conference and trade show designed by and for practitioners in the fields of high-performance building and design, energy efficiency, and renewable energy. It brings more than 1,000 industry leaders and emerging professionals together to learn from and share ideas with each other. Our two full days of sessions are carefully curated by a volunteer committee of NESEA Members, and feature best practices and lessons learned from real case studies and proven data, as well as showcasing innovative technologies and programs.

Conference Theme

As NESEA celebrates our 50 year anniversary, this year’s BuildingEnergy Boston conference is all about working together to Build the Movement. Are you a practitioner looking to share the benefits of high-performance design beyond our current NESEA community? Are you a small business owner training new staff to meet the growing demand for sustainable building design? Are you a developer itching to push your consultants beyond “business as usual”? All of us are building this movement together, honing the “cutting edge” and bringing it to the mainstream, codifying best practices, and working to eliminate barriers to adoption.

Building the movement requires reaching beyond our traditional networks and silos: engaging with utilities regarding electrification and thermal energy networks, training emerging professionals and career changers, collaborating with finance providers to unlock capital for bold new projects, and much more. It also means including and empowering those from backgrounds and identities traditionally underrepresented in this space.

Our industry faces a great challenge in transitioning to a zero-carbon building sector. This can feel overwhelming and impossible as an individual practitioner or company, but when our efforts are aligned and supported in community, we find possibility and opportunity for great change. By building the movement together, we can bring about the changes at scale required to achieve a sustainable and equitable built environment.

Who Attends

BuildingEnergy Boston is an interdisciplinary conference that brings together leaders and emerging professionals committed to developing a more sustainable, healthy, and resilient built environment. Attendees represent dozens of industries including architecture, engineering, building, design, consulting, policy, finance, auditing, installation, construction, and education.

If you are interested in transforming our built environment, this conference is for you!

Here in Maine, we build houses with basements and concrete foundation walls…at least, that’s the conventional wisdom. There are many reasons to rethink this approach, including concrete’s high environmental impact. If you’re interested in ditching the traditional concrete basement for a sustainable alternative, you won’t want to miss our conversation with Randy Rand (r.haus design.build, passivhausMAINE) and Reggie Lebel (Emerald Builders).
