Q&A with LaPlante Home Services
Michael LaPlante started what is now known as LaPlante Home Service in 1974. They offer plumbing as well as electrical and HVAC services, installations of heat pumps, EV chargers, generators, and recently expanded into solar to complement their service line.
We caught up with them recently to learn a little more about their work and what they see as opportunities for Maine homeowners with solar and heat pumps.
Demand for renewable energy has grown significantly in the past few years. What future do you envision for solar power in Maine and the world at large?
As Mainers, we’re all about self-reliance – and what better way to embrace that than by harnessing the power of the sun? Solar energy gives us the chance to power our homes, run appliances, and even heat water, all while keeping control of our energy. The future of solar is about making sustainability and energy independence the norm, both here in Maine and across the globe.
Cold winters and a northern latitude may be of concern to Mainers considering solar. How is Maine geographically suited for year-round solar production?
Maine may not have the intense sun hours of the Southwest, but solar in Maine still delivers impressive savings. Here's the deal: you want to make the most of your solar investment, and when you can generate your own power, lock in costs for the next 25+ years, and minimize your environmental footprint—you're not just saving money, you're securing a more independent and sustainable future. It’s a win-win!
When all is said and done, what's the most "Bang for your buck"? Heat pump or solar?
If you can swing it, we’d recommend both! Solar gives you the opportunity to produce your own power at a fixed cost for over 25 years, and that power can be used for everything from heating and cooling your home to running lights and appliances. It’s the ultimate step toward energy independence. But, if you had to start with just one, solar is the best way to lay the groundwork for a fully sustainable, self-sufficient home.
Installing solar can be an expensive undertaking – what programs and credits are available to help with the initial costs? How about heat pumps and hot water heaters?
Right now, Efficiency Maine and the Federal Tax Credit can help you reclaim a good chunk of your project costs, making solar and heat pump installations much more affordable. These programs are definitely worth checking out – but keep in mind, they can change pretty quickly. If you’re thinking about going solar or installing heat pumps, it’s a smart move to act sooner rather than later to take full advantage of the savings!
How much can homeowners and business owners expect to save by either using heat pumps or solar? And how will these choices help to reduce their carbon footprint?
In southern Maine and coastal NH, many homeowners still rely on traditional heating systems, but adding heat pumps and solar panels is a game-changer for reducing costs and cutting down your carbon footprint. Heat pumps can reduce your heating and cooling costs by up to 50% compared to conventional systems, making them a smart, efficient addition to your home. Solar power, on the other hand, lets you produce your own electricity and save big on energy bills over the long term.
By supplementing your existing heating system with heat pumps and adding solar panels, you’re not just saving money – you're also reducing your carbon footprint in a meaningful way. It’s a powerful combo for both your wallet and the planet!
What are a few good questions to ask when researching heat pump and solar installers?
We always recommend starting with Google reviews. They're quick, convenient, and give you a great sense of a company’s reputation. If a company has been around for a while, they should have plenty of reviews that can give you a good idea of how they perform.
Beyond that, make sure to ask about their workmanship guarantee, licensing, and insurance – these are key to ensuring you’re working with true professionals. It’s also crucial that the company has a strong service department to support you long after installation. In the solar and heat pump industry, experience matters, so choosing a company that’s been in business for many years is essential for reliability and ongoing support. Finally, don’t forget that a proper solar or heat pump design ensures your system is customized to fit your needs and maximize efficiency.
