BaseCamp Design Workshop is a residential architecture firm based in Portland, Maine. We design thoughtful, energy efficient homes that celebrate Maine’s landscape, craftsmanship, and sense of place.

Our approach begins with listening — understanding how you live, what inspires you, and how your home can become your personal basecamp: a place of restoration, connection, and adventure. Every project, big or small, blends design excellence with environmental responsibility. We incorporate Passive House principles, durable materials, and building science to create homes that feel great to live in and perform exceptionally.

Founder Taylor Massey aims to unite high performance design with a spirit of exploration. Having traveled widely across the world, he brings a broad perspective shaped by the places he’s visited. Those experiences inform a design sensibility that values authenticity, craftsmanship, and comfort in all seasons. As a licensed architect in multiple states spanning from Maine to Washington, Taylor has hands on experience in residential, commercial, and civic projects. He approaches each project as both craftsman and guide, helping clients create deeply personal spaces that feel rooted, enduring, and ready for adventures ahead.

Whether you’re planning your primary home, a camp on the coast, or a high performance retreat in the woods, BaseCamp Design Workshop helps you design a home worthy of the life you want to live — your basecamp for everyday adventure.

Sustainability Statement

Sustainability and building performance are central to every project at BaseCamp Design Workshop. Founder Taylor Massey is a Certified Passive House Consultant (PHIUS) and LEED Accredited Professional (BD+C). A licensed architect in Maine, Texas, and Washington, Taylor is an active member of PassivHausMAINE, where he has served on the Building Coalition; and of the American Institute of Architects, contributing to the Design Committee, Legislative Committee, and Small Firm Exchange.

We could not speak more highly or recommend Taylor more. We have worked with many vendors in this profession and Taylor surpasses them all. With his professionalism, creativity, and overall process he is easily one of the best. We came to Taylor with big ideas and a firm budget and he was able to create a design that exceeded our expectations. From the beginning, Taylor was completely transparent about his process and pricing; and was very flexible with his schedule for meetings. He continues to follow-up to ensure that what he has helped us create is coming to fruition; always, offering any additional help that is needed. We consider ourselves so fortunate to have found Taylor and should we ever need an architect again, he would be our first call. Again, we can not recommend Taylor and his services more.
Taylor Massey is an architect’s architect. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of sustainable design and balances that with what I feel is truly excellent taste. Taylor designed a “tiny house” for me currently under construction on an island in coastal Maine, and not only has he been unfailingly wonderful to work with, he brings a ton of true vision, knowledge, craft, and collegiality. He is extremely skilled in project management. I cannot recommend Taylor Massey more highly and hope to work with him many more times in the future.
